Meow the 35th – Cat’s got your wallet, not your tongue

Choupette by Karl Lagerfeld

Cats mean big money with their paws clawing fiercely at your wallet now that they have found their way into high fashion. Cats not only are en vogue in Vogue but also model as muses for designers.

Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette, who, by the way, already  has her own facebook page, twitter account, and book, has become the star of “Monster Choupette” and “Choupette Capsule”, her own collections by Lagerfeld.

Choupette accessories include bags, shoppers, iPad and iPhone holders, key-chains, hats, and scarves with prices starting at EUR 140.

Even though he already is a big name in high fashion, Lagerfeld also banks on his cat’s strong marketing impact on people. On Karl Lagerfeld’s official page, it says for the Monster Choupettte Collection

here’s no end to surprises when it comes to Choupette. The charming little cat has now got a range of accessories in her image – well, in the image of a “cartoon” Monster Choupette who will delight fans with her big blue eyes and ready-to-grab mouth. The feline star has of course given her full attention to the collection, which she has even signed with her own paw…

and for her capsule collection.

As the name Choupette is now almost as famous in fashion circles as that of her owner, KARL LAGERFELD launches a special capsule dedicated to the most fashionable of cats. […] Choupette gives her name to a range of bags including a handy shopper and cross-body version, as well as Iphone and Ipad holders. The monochrome design also appears on a cute key-chain. For cat-lovers who have to face the elements, the collection offers the Choupette hat and matching scarf to keep warm with a smile.

Even if Choupette accessories are not affordable for everyone, Choupette can still find her way into people’s homes with her book Choupette: The Private Life of a High-Flying Fashion Cat”:

Karl Lagerfeld’s world-famous cat dispenses essential advice on lifestyle, diet, fashion, beauty, and international travel for the uber-fashionable feline. Choupette—the constant feline companion of designer Karl Lagerfeld, creative director at Chanel—is a celebrity pet like no other. She has it all, from her own iPad to private jet service. She eats from Goyard silver seated next to Karl at the table, has been immortalized in Tokidoki figurines with the Kaiser, and has inspired his couture collections. “I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,” Mr. Lagerfeld said in a CNN interview. Choupette delivers words of wisdom to her 37,000+ Twitter devotees, but here, for the first time, she shares her complete lifestyle guide. Humorously themed chapters cover diet, beauty, healthcare, fashion tips, secret loves and pet hates for the pampered cat, along with observations and advice from Madame Horn (her vet), and Madame Françoise (her lady’s maid). Photographs taken by Karl himself include his Sacred Cat of Burma on fashion shoots with Laetitia Casta and Linda Evangelista. The book is completed with drawings, poetry, and photographs of literary cat-lovers including Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Saul Steinberg, Dorothy Parker, and Edward Gorey. This season’s most talked-about cat book is the perfect chic gift for cat lovers, the fashion-conscious, and style-aware readers.

Clearly, cats getting at your wallet, regardless of its size – big or small, is a phenomenon that cannot be ignored. Cats obviously have got more than your tongue nowadays.

  1. Oh, I forgot about the shoes. I remember seeing them in stores. Yes, they are more expensive. 🙂

Honestly, I would love to get one item of the Choupette collection. They are so sweet, but unfortunately very expensive.

this is so funny! Actually the other day I was looking for shoes and noticed that loafers with cat pictures on them are almost 3x more expensive 🙂

[…] Dolce & Gabbana are not the first fashion designers to use cats on their designs. Karl Lagerfeld’s Choupette Collection is another example (see also Meow the 36th – Cat’s got your wallet, not your tongue). […]
